What is dengue fever?
Dengue fever is a viral infection caused by the Aedes mosquito. It is a disease that can be caused by any one of the four related dengue viruses. Often, dengue is also known as break-bone fever because it severely affects the patient’s muscles and bones, causing pain that almost feels like a broken bone. The disease affects people in many countries around the world.
What are the causes of dengue fever?
Dengue fever is caused by one of the four viruses-
A patient can be infected with the same type of virus only once. However, they can be infected with at least two if not all four at once.
Dengue virus infection is caused by infected Aedes mosquito. This infection cannot spread from one person to another. It spreads only when the Aedes mosquito bites an infected person and then bites someone else.
Know the Symptoms of dengue
The symptoms a person exhibits depend on age of the person. However, usually, symptoms begin with a high fever within 4-7 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito.
Common symptoms of classic dengue include:
- Severe joint and muscle pain
- High fever up to 105 F
- Muscle, bone, and joint pain
- Pain behind the eyes
- Severe headache
- The whole body is covered in a rash
- Diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting
There are three types of fever, at which the person is at risk, such as mild dengue fever, dengue hemorrhagic fever, and dengue shock syndrome.
Mild dengue fever – Symptoms of this fever appear after 1 week of bite and include serious or fatal complications.
Dengue hemorrhagic fever – Symptoms are mild but may worsen gradually in a few days.
Dengue Shock Syndrome – This is a serious form of dengue and can even result in death.
5 Ways to avoid dengue fever at home:
-Reduce Mosquito Habitat
Dengue-causing mosquitoes thrive in weary water with things like tires, plastic covers, flower pots, pet water bowls, etc., reducing the habitat available for these mosquitoes (getting rid of stagnant water for breeding) to prevent dengue.
-Stay in well-tested homes
Close all your door and window properly or there are no holes in the door or window screen. This will eliminate the possibility of any mosquito entering the house.
-Use mosquito repellent
Using mosquito repellents, especially in tropical areas with high populations and crowds, can help repel mosquitoes by biting you. Apply mosquito repellent to your body while traveling to tropical places and when you are indoors.
-Wear protective clothing
To avoid being bitten by mosquitoes, a person can go in full pants with long-sleeved clothes and socks, and covered shoes. It is advisable to go for such protective clothing, especially in dengue-infested areas.
-Sleep under a mosquito net
Sleeping under a mosquito net can provide you and your children with a double layer of protection from being bitten by mosquitoes.
Effective treatment is possible if a clinical diagnosis is made early. Doctors use blood tests for the presence of viral antibodies or infections. If you experience symptoms of dengue, you should see a healthcare provider. Keep yourself and your family safe during this changing session.
